Ginseng consists of the main and lateral roots of Panax ginseng. The ginsenosides are considered to be the major pharmacologically active agents in ginseng. These are dammarane saponins specifically the protopanaxatriol class and the protopanaxadiol class. Ginseng root also contains other saponins, polysaccharides and essential oils, including polyacetylenes, trilinolein and other lipids.
Ginseng appears to act mainly on the hypothalamus and has a sparing action on the adrenal cortex, mediated through the anterior pituitary and ACTH release. Phase 1 of the GAS becomes more efficient through the tuning of the adrenal cortex, resulting in a stronger and quicker response with an effective feedback control. During phase 2 of GRAS glucocorticoid production is reduced by ginseng (sparing effect), while adrenal capacity is increased. Ginseng raises plasma ACTH and cortisone in a non-stressed state, increasing alertness and wellbeing. Ginseng displays clear tonic and adaptogenic properties.
Ginseng root increases learning and mental function. Extracts demonstrate properties similar to nootropic drugs (drugs that affect neurons favourably). Ginseng’s antioxidant and organ – protective actions are linked to enhanced nitric oxide synthesis in the endothelium of the lung, heart, and kidney and in the corpus cavernosum. Ginseng exhibits immune system enhancement (B and T – lymphocyte and natural killer cell activities). Ginseng may have antimutagenic, antidiabetic and increased human performance and wellbeing activity.
Green Tea catechins have been found to have a number of antioxidant activities. EGCG appears to have the greatest antioxidant activity of all the green tea catechins and, in some studies; it has been found to be a more potent antioxidant than ascorbate and reduced glutathione. In addition to their possible activity in preventing malignant transformation and inhibiting tumour growth, the green tea catechins may have antimetastatic potential. In this regard, EGCG has been found to inhibit the proteolytic enzyme urokinase. Green tea extract exhibits anti-ageing, cardioprotective, dental protective, gastroprotective, probiotic enhancing, immunostimulatory and thermogenic properties.
Thiamine deficiency is probably the most common avitaminosis in the west. Vitamin B1 is required for the decarboxylation reactions in energy production and plays a role in nerve conduction along with the oxidation of glucose. Deficiency involves carbohydrate metabolism, acetylcholine synthesis, depression, muscle pain and fatigue. Thiamine may have antioxidant, erythropoietic, cognition-and mood-modulatory, anti-atherosclerotic and detoxification activities. It has putative ergogenic activity.
Choline serves as a source of labile methyl groups for the biosynthesis of other methylated compounds. Choline is the precursor of acetylcholine, a mediator of synaptic transmission. Choline increases the use of fat as a fuel for muscle cells while preventing fat accumulation in the liver.
Any significant stressor has a dramatic effect on body magnesium homeostasis. Stress generates an increase in stress hormone (catecholamine) release, which initiates movement of cellular magnesium into the plasma with associated renal magnesium loss. Catecholamines also induce lipolysis, resulting in increased free fatty acid levels in blood. These fatty acids are able to bind magnesium, resulting in a further reduction in available magnesium and increased renal loss. Complicating the magnesium depleting effect of stress is the exaggerated release of stress hormones during magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is involved in over 300 metabolic reactions. It is necessary for every major biological process, including the production of cellular energy and the synthesis of nucleic acids and proteins. It is also important for the electrical stability of cells, the maintenance of membrane integrity, muscle contraction, nerve conduction and the regulation of vascular tone.
L- Alanine is a regulator of glucose metabolism triggering glucagon release. L-Phenylalanine is a precursor of the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenalin. Decreased levels of brain noradrenalin have been found in depressive states associated with fatigue and an increase in noradrenalin levels results in a sense of reward and wellbeing.
