L - Arginine

Arginine is a dibasic amino acid which, because it is hydrophilic, is usually found on the outside of globular proteins.  Arginine is a precursor in the formation of nitric oxide, creatine, polyamines, L-glutamate, L-proline, agmatin (a possible neurotransmitter in the brain) and the arginine-containing tetra peptide tuftsin, believed to be an immunomodulator.  L-arginine is a glycogenic amino acid; it can be converted to D-glucose and glycogen if needed by the body or it can be catabolised to produce biological energy.  Supplemental L-arginine may have anti-atherogenic, anti-osteoporotic, cardiovascular, anti-ulcer, antioxidant and immunomodulatory actions. It may also have wound-repair activity.  Our L-Arginine is flavoured with fructose to improve patient compliance and is catalyzed with the T J Clark phytogenic mineral catalyst for superior bioavailability.

Pharmacology and Research of Active Ingredients:
  • Arginine is a precursor for polyamines required for proliferative responses characteristic in healing, has an anti-proliferative effect on vascular smooth muscle, improves sperms motility, precursor to NO, increases NK and lymphokine activated killer cell cytotoxicity, enhances protein synthesis and thymus gland activity, is glycogenic and acts as a methyl donor.
  • Numerous in vitro experiments have shown that L-arginine has effects on endothelial cells that could be expected to inhibit cardiovascular disease. Inferences have been drawn from these studies suggesting that L-arginine, through its nitric oxide activity, especially in the endothelial cells of the blood vessels, inhibits vasoconstriction, thrombolytic activity, cell proliferation, inflammation and other activities that promote cardiovascular disease. Similarly, L-arginine has had significant positive effects in hypercholesterolaemic and hypertensive humans. It has also been helpful in those with angina pectoris. In a recent long-term study, supplemental L-arginine, given for six months, resulted in significant improvement in coronary small-vessel endothelial function associated with a decrease in plasma endothelin concentrations.
  • In other studies, L-arginine was credited with significantly reducing lipid peroxidation in patients with diabetes mellitus. Conflicting results were produced by two studies related to L-arginine's effects on vasomotor response in smokers. In one of these studies, L-arginine significantly reversed abnormal myocardial blood flow response to a cold pressor test.
  • L-arginine is of benefit in some kidney diseases and shows some promise in interstitial cystitis. It helps improve kidney function in some diabetic animal models and prevents chronic renal failure in others.  A recent study indicated that L-arginine facilitates renal vasodilatation and natriuresis in renal transplant patients. There was also the suggestion in this study that L-arginine counteracts the anti-natriuretic effect of cyclosporin.
  • In human work, oral L-arginine has increased the responsiveness of some immune components and has decreased the number and percent of T suppressor/cytotoxic cells (CD8) in healthy human volunteers. In a clinical trial involving patients undergoing abdominal surgery, intravenous L-arginine diminished postoperative reduction in the mitogenic responses of peripheral blood lymphocytes to ConA and PHA. Enhancement of these same responses was reported in a study in which L-arginine was given to HIV patients. L-arginine supplementation in this study, did not, however, alter T-lymphocyte subsets or ratios.
  • Arginine has been suggested as a preventative for osteoporosis, affects the release of growth hormone and prevent chronic renal failure and age related reduction in renal failure.  Oral L-arginine can increase the glomerular filtration rate and renal plasma flow by 50%.
  • Phytogenic Mineral Catalyst – Our Polyfloramin™extracts contain up to 72 trace elements for enhanced bioavailability, assimilation and synergy of the active ingredients contained in our L-Arginine formula.
Clinical Applications:

T J Clark’s L-Arginine formula may be beneficial in the prevention and treatment of;

  • Alcohol abuse, atherosclerosis, balloon angioplasty, cardiac surgery, cancer, chemotherapy, congestive heart failure, diabetes, erection problems, glucose intolerance and gut derived infections.
  • High cholesterol, hypertension, kidney damage, kidney hypertrophy, liver disease, fatty liver, poor immunity, steroid medication, wound healing, low sperm count and male infertility.
Precautions:
  • Because of absence of long-term safety studies, and because of the possibility of growth hormone stimulation, pregnant women and nursing mothers should avoid L-arginine supplementation.
  • Proteins of the herpes simplex virus are rich in L-arginine, and there are a few reports (mainly anecdotal) of those taking supplemental L-arginine who have had recurrences of oral herpes lesions.  Although it is unlikely that those with a history of herpes simplex virus infection will have recurrences if they use L-arginine supplements, they should nevertheless be aware of this possibility.

Vitamin C

T J Clark’s catalyzed vitamin C is a pure form of ascorbic acid with the addition of a proprietary blend of mineral compounds. The addition of these mineral compounds may promote a greater production of ascorbate lactone derivatives, providing greater tissue availability and higher retention of ascorbate than other vitamin C products.
