Copper deficiency has been found to increase the susceptibility of lipoproteins to peroxidation in rats and to increase oxidative DNA damage in lymphocytes in culture. Copper is a cofactor for copper/zinc superoxide dismutase and ceruloplasmin, two important antioxidant enzymes, and the possible antioxidant activity of copper may be accounted for, at least in part, by its role in these enzymes. Copper facilitates cellular oxidation, catecholamine synthesis, elastin and collagen synthesis, maintains skin, bone, and nerve function, melanin and myelin synthesis and regulates iron metabolism. Copper may also prevent some aspects of cardiovascular disease.
Chromium’s mechanism involves increased insulin binding, increased insulin receptor number and increased insulin receptor phosphorylation. Numerous studies have shown chromium’s ability to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce hyperinsulinemia. A large-scale clinical trial involving 180 persons afflicted with diabetes mellitus type II were administered chromium, resulting in normalisation of glucose and insulin levels in all subjects. Normalising insulin activity will result in a reduction of adipose tissue, increased muscle mass, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, and reduced stress response.
Iodine is rapidly and efficiently absorbed from the small intestine following ingestion. A large fraction of absorbed iodine is taken up by the thyroid gland via the sodium/iodide symporter. Apart from its use in iodine-deficiency disorders and for certain hyperthyroid conditions and thyroid storm, iodine is used as an expectorant and has demonstrated some ability to protect against the toxic effects of radioactive materials. It has also shown some preliminary efficacy in the treatment of sarcoidosis and has ameliorated some of the symptoms of fibrocystic disease of the breast.
Manganese activates the enzymes necessary for the body to use biotin, thiamine, vitamin C, and choline. It is important for the digestion and utilization of food, especially proteins, through peptidase activity, and it is needed for the synthesis of cholesterol and fatty acids and in glucose metabolism. As a cofactor in glycolysis, manganese aids glucose metabolism. By activating the arginase enzyme, manganese helps form urea, the end product of protein and ammonia breakdown cleared by the kidneys. Manganese may also be important in the growth and development of normal bone structure and in the formation of mucopolysaccharides, which are needed for healthy joint membranes, and act as an antioxidant by activating SOD.
Molybdenum is a vital part of three important enzyme systems—xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase, and sulfate oxidase—and so has a vital role in uric acid formation and iron utilization, in carbohydrate metabolism, and sulfite detoxification as well. In the soil and possibly in the body, as the enzyme nitrate reductase, molybdenum can reduce the production or counteract the actions of nitrosamines, known cancer-causing chemicals, especially in the colon.
Selenium deficiency appears to depress the effectiveness of various components of the immune system. In humans, selenium deficiency has been associated with depressed IgG and IgM antibody titres. In animal models, selenium deficiency has resulted in depressed neutrophil activity, decreased candidacidal activity by neutrophils and depressed cellular immunity. Selenium supplementation in humans has resulted in increased natural killer cell activity. Selenium is required for adequate thyroid function, activation of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, is anticarcinogenic, anti-atherogenic, and can help detoxify numerous metal complexes.
Zinc is required for a number of immune functions, including T-lymphocyte activity. Zinc comprises the structure of copper/zinc-superoxide dismutase (Cu/Zn-SOD). Zinc plays a structural role in Cu/Zn-SOD. Zinc may also have antioxidant activity via its association with the copper-binding protein metallothionein. Zinc is an essential cofactor in the production of connective tissue, bone, cartilage and has been shown to help arthritic conditions.
